Lecture: The birth of Buddha (Michigan)
by Yong Peng (ypong001(a)yahoo.com) [AUS:IP logged]

"The Birth of Buddha" will be discussed Tuesday March 17, 2009, by Donald S. Lopez, the Arthur E. Link Distinguished University Professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies.

The event takes place at 4 p.m. in the University of Michigan's Rackham Auditorium.

Lopez is chair of the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures and the Michigan Society of Fellows. His lecture will describe the origins of the European fascination with the figure of the Buddha and his transformation from a stone idol worshipped by heathens to a historical hero teaching a system of reason and ethics without the trappings of religion (moderator note: or maybe the other way around?).
