Eva.m me suta.m – eka.m samaya.m bhagavaa kosalesu caarika.m carati mahataa bhikkhusa'nghena saddhi.m. Addasaa kho bhagavaa addhaanamaggappa.tipanno aññatarasmi.m padese mahanta.m aggikkhandha.m aaditta.m sampajjalita.m sajotibhuuta.m. Disvaana maggaa okkamma aññatarasmi.m rukkhamuule paññatte aasane nisiidi. Nisajja kho bhagavaa bhikkhuu aamantesi: "passatha no tumhe bhikkhave amu.m mahanta.m aggikkhandha.m aaditta.m sampajjalita.m sajotibhuuta.m?"ti. "Eva.m bhante"ti.

Thus have I heard. Once the Blessed One was wandering among the Kosala people together with a large company of monks.

  • eva.m - thus.
  • me - by me, first person singular enclitic, used in instrumental, dative and genitive cases.
  • suta.m - heard, present participle of sunaati 'hears'.
  • eka.m - one, single, only.
  • samaya.m - time, period, season.
  • bhagavaa - (nominative) Blessed One, Fortunate One (epithet for the Buddha).
  • kosalesu - 'among the Kosalans' or 'in Kosala country', locative from Kosala, a geographical name.
  • caarika.m - alms-round, wandering while gathering alms.
  • carati - moves about, behaves, conducts (oneself), leads, practices; carries out.
  • mahataa - great, big.
  • bhikkhu - monk.
  • sa'nghena - instrumental case from 'sa'ngho' - community, association, especially community of Buddhist monks. Charles Duroiselle, on page 157 of 'A Practical Grammar of the Paali Language' notes that instrumental case expresses companionship, and is then used with the indeclinables, saha or saddhi.m 'with', 'together with'.

Entering a major path, the Blessed One saw in a certain spot a great mass of fire, burning, blazing, glowing.

  • addhaana - long, stretch, extent.
  • magga - path.
  • pa.tipanno - followed, reached, practiced, entered upon (nominative).
  • aññatarasmi.m - in a certain (locative).
  • padese - location, region, district, spot (locative).
  • mahanta.m - large (accusative of mahaa, adjective in -ant).
  • aggikkhanda.m = aggi + khanda.m = fire-mass.
  • aaditta.m - on fire, blazing, burning.
  • sampajjalita.m = sa.m + pajjalita.m = in flames, ablaze.
  • sajotibhuuta.m = sa + joti + bhuuta.m = ablaze, aglow.

Disvaana maggaa okkamma aññatarasmi.m rukkhamuule paññatte aasane nisiidi.

After seeing (it) and stepping down from the path he sat on the appointed seat at the root of a certain tree.

  • disvaana - having seen, (gerund of dassa).
  • maggaa - from road (ablative from 'magga').
  • okkamma - having gone aside from.
  • rukkhamuule - at the foot of a tree (locative from 'rukkhamuula' < 'rukkha' tree + 'mula' root).
  • paññatte - on the pointed out, appointed (i.e. special) (locative according to the case of aasane).
  • aasane - on the seat (locative).
  • nisiidi - (he) sat down.

Nisajja kho bhagavaa bhikkhuu aamantesi: "passatha no tumhe bhikkhave amu.m mahanta.m aggi-kkhandha.m aaditta.m sampajjalita.m sajotibhuuta.m?"ti.

Thus have I heard. Once the Blessed One was wandering among the Kosala people together with a large company of monks. Entering a major path, the Blessed One saw in a certain spot a great mass of fire, burning, blazing, glowing. After seeing (it) and stepping down from the path he sat on the appointed seat at the root of a certain tree. After sitting down the Blessed One said to the monks: “Do you see, monks, that great mass of fire, burning, blazing, glowing?” "Yes, venerable Sir."
