Sutta Translation

"Ta.m ki.m maññatha, bhikkhave, katama.m nu kho vara.m – ya.m balavaa puriso tattena ayopa.t.tena aadittena sampajjalitena sajotibhuutena kaaya.m sampalive.theyya, ya.m vaa khattiyamahaasaalaana.m vaa braahma.namahaasaalaana.m vaa gahapatimahaasaalaana.m vaa saddhaadeyya.m ciivara.m paribhuñjeyyaa"ti? "Etadeva, bhante, vara.m – ya.m khattiyamahaasaalaana.m vaa …pe… saddhaadeyya.m ciivara.m paribhuñjeyya, dukkhañheta.m, bhante, ya.m balavaa puriso tattena ayopa.t.tena aadittena sampajjalitena sajotibhuutena kaaya.m sampalive.theyyaa"ti.

If a strong man were to wrap (his) body with hot iron plate that is burning, blazing and glowing?

  • tatta (adj., p.p. of tapati) heated, hot, glowing.
  • ayopa.t.tena (ins. of ayopa.t.ta) with iron plate (PED pa.t.ta).
  • sampalive.theyya (optative of sampalive.theti) if he would wrap up.

ya.m vaa khattiya-mahaasaalaana.m vaa braahma.na-mahaasaalaana.m vaa gahapati-mahaasaalaana.m vaa saddhaadeyya.m ciivara.m paribhuñjeyyaa"ti?
that / or / of rich kshatriyas / or / of rich brahmins / or / of rich householders / or / given in faith / robe / would enjoy / (end-quote)

  • saddhaadeyya (adj.) a gift in faith (PED saddhaa).
  • ciivara (n.) monk's robe.
  • paribhuñjeyya (optative of paribhuñjati) if he would enjoy, use.
