on one side / sitting / then / venerable / Rahula / the Blessed One / he said this
Then, sitting on one side, the venerable Rahula said this to the Blessed One,

  • etadavoca - eta.m + avoca = he said this.

"Katha.m bhaavitaa nu kho, bhante, aana-apaana-ssati, katha.m bahuliikataa maha-pphalaa hoti maha-anisa.msaa"ti?
how / developed / - / sir / in breathing-out breathing-mindfulness / how / practised frequently / great fruits / is / great profit
"Sir, how is mindfulness of breathing developed? How is there great fruits and profit when practised frequently?"

  • katha.m (adv.) how?

"Ya.m kiñci, Raahula, ajjhatta.m paccatta.m kakkha.la.m kharigata.m upaadinna.m, seyyathida.m -
that / whatever / Rahula / internally / individually / solid / solidified / clung to / namely
"Rahula, whatever internally, and individually, is solid, solidified, and clung to, namely:

  • seyyathida.m = seyyathaa ida.m: just as this (ida.m), as follows, namely, that is.

kesaa lomaa nakhaa dantaa taco ma.msa.m nhaaru a.t.thi a.t.thimiñja.m vakka.m hadaya.m yakana.m kilomaka.m pihaka.m papphaasa.m anta.m antagu.na.m udariya.m kariisa.m,
head hair / body hair / nails / teeth / skin / flesh / veins / bones / bone-marrow / kidney / heart / liver / pleura / spleen / lungs / large intestine / small intestine / stomach / excreta
head hair, body hair, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, veins, bones, bone-marrow, kidney, heart, liver, pleura, spleen, lungs, large intestine, small intestine, stomach, excreta,

  • nhaaru = nahaaruu, veins.

ya.m vaa pan-aññam-pi kiñci ajjhatta.m paccatta.m kakkha.la.m kharigata.m upaadinna.m -
that / or / else-other-and / whatever / internally / individually / solid / solidified / clung to
or whatever else internally, and individually, is solid, solidified, and clung to.

aya.m vuccati, Raahula, ajjhattikaa pathavii-dhaatu.
this / is called / Rahula / internal / earth-element
This, Rahula, is called the internal earth element.

  • pathavii = pa.thavii, earth.
  • dhaatu (f.) element.

Yaa c-eva kho pana ajjhattikaa pathavii-dhaatu yaa ca baahiraa pathavii-dhaatu, pathavii-dhaatu-r-ev-esaa.
that / and-very / indeed / but / internal / earth-element / that / and / external / earth-element / thus this earth element
But that very internal earth element and that external earth element are simply earth element.

  • ceva = ca - and; eva - (emphatic particle) very, in this case that (yaa) very.
  • ev-esaa = eva.m esaa: just that.

Ta.m 'n-eta.m mama, n-eso-ham-asmi, na m-eso attaa'ti -
that / not-this / mine / not this I am / not / for me-this / self / (end-quote)
Thus "this is not mine, this I am not, this is not myself"

evam-eta.m yathaabhuuta.m sammappaññaaya da.t.thabba.m.
thus this / just as it is / with right wisdom / is to be seen
is to be seen with right wisdom just as it is.

Evam-eta.m yathaabhuuta.m sammappaññaaya disvaa pathavii-dhaatuyaa nibbindati, pathavii-dhaatuyaa citta.m viraajeti".
thus this / just as it is / with right wisdom / having seen / [on] earth element / becomes dispassionate / from earth element / mind / detaches
Having seen this with right wisdom just as it is, (one) becomes dispassionate towards the earth element (and) the mind detaches from the earth element."

  • nibbindati - becomes dispassionate, disenchanted, disillusioned, satiated, disgusted with;
  • viraajeti - to detach from (virajjati caus.).

Then, at evening time, the venerable Rahula got up from solitude and approached the Blessed One. Having approached and paid respect to the Blessed One, he sat down on one side. Then, sitting on one side, the venerable Rahula said this to the Blessed One, "Sir, how is mindfulness of breathing developed? How is there great fruits and profit when practised frequently?"

"Rahula, whatever internally, and individually, is solid, solidified, and clung to, namely: head hair, body hair, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, veins, bones, bone-marrow, kidney, heart, liver, pleura, spleen, lungs, large intestine, small intestine, stomach, excreta, or whatever else internally, and individually, is solid, solidified, and clung to. This, Rahula, is called the internal earth element. But that very internal earth element and that external earth element are simply earth element. Thus "this is not mine, this I am not, this is not myself" is to be seen with right wisdom just as it is. Having seen this with right wisdom just as it is, (one) becomes dispassionate towards the earth element (and) the mind detaches from the earth element."
