"Katamaa ca, Raahula, vaayo-dhaatu?
which / and / Rahula / wind-element
"And what, Rahula, is the wind element?

  • vaayo - (nt.) wind (taken as an object of meditation) or motion, has the characteristic of motion or pressure.

Vaayo-dhaatu siyaa ajjhattikaa, siyaa baahiraa.
wind-element / may be / internal / may be / external

Katamaa ca, Raahula, ajjhattikaa vaayo-dhaatu?
which / and / Rahula / internal / wind-element
And what, Rahula, is the internal wind element?

Ya.m ajjhatta.m paccatta.m vaayo vaayogata.m upaadinna.m, seyyathida.m -
that / internally / individually / wind / windy / clung to / namely
That, internally, and individually, is wind, windy, and clung to, namely:

  • vaayogata.m - windy.

uddha'n-gamaa vaataa, adho-gamaa vaataa, kucchi-sayaa vaataa, ko.t.thaa-sayaa vaataa, a'ngam-a'nga-anusaarino vaataa, assaaso passaaso,

thus / that / or / else-other-and / whatever / internally / individually / wind / windy / clung to
or whatever else internally, and individually is wind, windy and clung to.

aya.m vuccati, Raahula, ajjhattikaa vaayo-dhaatu.
this / is called / Rahula / internal / wind-element
This, Rahula, is called the internal wind element.

Yaa c-eva kho pana ajjhattikaa vaayo-dhaatu yaa ca baahiraa vaayo-dhaatu vaayo-dhaatu-r-ev-esaa.
that / and-very / indeed / but / internal / motion-element / that / and / external / motion-element / thus this motion element
But that very internal motion element and that external motion element are simply motion element.

Ta.m 'n-eta.m mama, n-eso-ham-asmi, na m-eso attaa'ti -
that / not-this / mine / not this I am / not / for me-this / self
Thus "this is not mine, this I am not, this is not myself"

evam-eta.m yathaabhuuta.m sammappaññaaya da.t.thabba.m.
thus this / just as it is / with right wisdom / is to be seen
is to be seen with right wisdom just as it is.

Evam-eta.m yathaabhuuta.m sammappaññaaya disvaa vaayo-dhaatuyaa nibbindati, vaayo-dhaatuyaa citta.m viraajeti.
thus this / just as it is / with right wisdom / having seen / [on] motion element / becomes dispassionate / from motion element / mind / detaches
Having seen this with right wisdom just as it is, (one) becomes dispassionate towards the motion element (and) detaches the mind from the motion element.
