Seyyathaapi, Raahula, pathaviyaa sucimpi nikkhipanti, asucimpi nikkhipanti, guuthagatampi nikkhipanti, muttagatampi nikkhipanti, khe.lagatampi nikkhipanti, pubbagatampi nikkhipanti, lohitagatampi nikkhipanti, na ca tena pathavii a.t.tiiyati vaa haraayati vaa jigucchati vaa; evameva kho tva.m, Raahula, pathaviisama.m bhaavana.m bhaavehi.     • The following is based on messages from Jim Anderson and Nina van Gorkom.
      Bhaavayato is a present participle derived from the causative stem -- bhaavaya. There are several variants of the present participle: bhaaventa, bhaavayanta, bhaavayamaana. The causative present participle stem is bhaavayanta. The final word bhaavayato can be in either dative or genitive case. In the context of this sentence, the dative case (follows te, for you) is implied.

  • uppannaa (pp. of uppajjati) arisen.

  • manaapa (adj.) pleasant, agreeable, pleasing.

  • amanaapaa (adj.) unpleasant, disagreeable, not pleasing.

  • phassa (m.) impression.

  • na (ind.) not.

  • pariyaadaaya (abs. of pariyaadaati) having overcome.

  • .thassanti (future tense of ti.t.thati) will remain, persist.

Rahula, for you who are cultivating the mental development that is like the earth, pleasant and unpleasant impressions that have arisen will not persistently overwhelm the mind.
