"Tejosama.m, Raahula, bhaavana.m bhaavehi. Tejosamañhi te, Raahula, bhaavana.m bhaavayato uppannaa manaapaamanaapaa phassaa citta.m na pariyaadaaya .thassanti. Seyyathaapi, Raahula, tejo sucimpi dahati, asucimpi dahati, guuthagatampi dahati, muttagatampi dahati, khe.lagatampi dahati, pubbagatampi dahati, lohitagatampi dahati, na ca tena tejo a.t.tiiyati vaa haraayati vaa jigucchati vaa; evameva kho tva.m, Raahula, tejosama.m bhaavana.m bhaavehi. Tejosamañhi te, Raahula, bhaavana.m bhaavayato uppannaa manaapaamanaapaa phassaa citta.m na pariyaadaaya .thassanti.

Rahula, cultivate the mental development that is like fire.

Rahula, for you who are cultivating the mental development that is like fire,

uppannaa manaapaamanaapaa phassaa citta.m na pariyaadaaya .thassanti.
arisen / pleasant and unpleasant / impressions / mind / not / having overcome / will persist
pleasant and unpleasant impressions that have arisen will not persistently overwhelm the mind.

Seyyathaapi, Raahula, tejo sucimpi dahati, asucimpi dahati,
just as / Rahula / fire / also what is clean / burns / also what is dirty / burns
Rahula, just as fire burns what is clean and what is dirty,

  • dahati (v.) burns.

guuthagatampi dahati, muttagatampi dahati,
also faeces / burns / also urine / burns
burns faeces and urine,

khe.lagatampi dahati, pubbagatampi dahati, lohitagatampi dahati,
also spittle / burns / also pus / burns / also blood / burns
spittle, pus and blood,

na ca tena tejo a.t.tiiyati vaa haraayati vaa jigucchati vaa;
not / and yet / because of it / fire / is afflicted / or / is vexed / or / is disgusted
and yet fire is not afflicted, vexed or disgusted because of it.

evameva kho tva.m, Raahula, tejosama.m bhaavana.m bhaavehi.
likewise / indeed / you / Rahula / fire-like / mental development / cultivate
Likewise, Rahula, you should cultivate the mental development that is like fire.

Tejosamañhi te, Raahula, bhaavana.m bhaavayato uppannaa manaapaamanaapaa phassaa citta.m na pariyaadaaya .thassanti.
fire-like / for you / Rahula / mental development / is cultivating / arisen / pleasant and unpleasant / impressions / mind / not / having overcome / will persist
Rahula, for you who are cultivating the mental development that is like fire, pleasant and unpleasant impressions that have arisen will not persistently overwhelm the mind.

"Rahula, cultivate the mental development that is like fire. Rahula, for you who are cultivating the mental development that is like fire, pleasant and unpleasant impressions that have arisen will not persistently overwhelm the mind. Rahula, just as fire burns what is clean and what is dirty, burns faeces and urine, spittle, pus and blood, and yet fire is not afflicted, vexed or disgusted because of it. Likewise, Rahula, you should cultivate the mental development that is like fire. Rahula, for you who are cultivating the mental development that is like fire, pleasant and unpleasant impressions that have arisen will not persistently overwhelm the mind.
